One of the greatest ways to understand why sustainability and preserving the earth’s resources are important causes is to get outside! Experiencing the Great Outdoors is a great way to indulge a love of adventure while appreciating our precious planet. There are plenty of reasons to opt outside for your next getaway, but you will likely need some special equipment do it safely and enjoyably. I’ve outlined some benefits of venturing outside, along with a list of essential gear and resources to help find the gear sustainably and affordably!

Why travel outdoors?

Of course, it is amazing to behold what man can accomplish by touring art museums and appreciating architecture, but it is equally awe-inducing and far more mysterious to explore the natural wonders created by the earth over millions of years. Not to mention that environmental psychology shows that time spent in nature promotes inner happiness and peace!

No matter where you live, you are likely close to a natural destination of some sort, which can mean less travel time (and reduced carbon footprint) than picking a more extravagant destination. Do some research for hiking trails or campgrounds near you -- I can guarantee, no matter where you are, there is some place for you to check out.

Research also shows that spending time outdoors is becoming more inclusive and diverse among LGBTQ and minority populations as younger generations gravitate toward camping and hiking, as the barrier to entry is less austere than international travel. One common barrier, however, is the cost-prohibitive nature of high-quality gear. If you are traveling and intend to camp, hike, rock climb, etc. you will need specialized equipment in order to be safe, and you won’t want to skimp on quality for some of these items, as some of them are literally means of survival and plenty of equipment can make roughing it much easier and more comfortable.

What gear do I need?

Your list will depend on your desired activity! Whether you are camping, hiking, fishing, each adventure’s requisite gear will vary. There are a few consistent items, however, such as water bottles, backpacks, weather appropriate clothing, comfortable shoes and sunscreen. If your heart begins to race just thinking about purchasing all new items for a weekend away or a day-trip, have no fear! Below are some great resources for buying affordable high-quality gear to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable outdoor adventure. Just be sure, wherever you go, to do your best to abide by Leave No Trace principles.

  1. REI: Used - Outdoors outfitter REI sells secondhand backpacking, camping, climbing and other outdoor adventure gear for sometimes as much as half the price as buying it new! Not only is this a great deal from a high quality brand, but repurposing used gear is a win for the environment . as well!

  2. Outdoor Gear Exchange - Vermont-based Outdoor Gear Exchange and consignment shop is serious about two things: selling quality gear at more affordable prices to make the outdoors more accessible, and preserving the environment.

  3. Facebook - Joining a locally-based Facebook group for outdoor enthusiasts isn’t just a great way to find a like-minded community you can hike or camp with IRL, but these groups also often act as a marketplace for gently-used gear at great prices. Even better, you can connect directly with the previous owner to ask questions about the gear before you get it.
