Our Top 5 Sustainable San Diego Activities

San Diego is the BEST. Take it from someone who lived there. I sometimes can't believe it took me so long to get there. San Diego wasn't even on my radar until my last job - based in downtown SD - approached me with an opportunity. Pretty soon I found myself by the beach, and I will always be grateful for my time there.

San Diego is one of the places that inspired me to be doing what I do today. The city is at the forefront of eco-friendly everything, and its hospitality industry is no exception. Scroll on down for my top sustainable San Diego travel tips from a former local ;)

  1. Stay at one of the city's forward-thinking eco-friendly hotels like Inn at Moonlight Beach or HI San Diego Point Loma - these places offer communal gathering spaces to get to know fellow travelers and they really take reducing their environmental impact VERY seriously.

  2. Break a sweat - Detox for the day ahead at the donation-based yoga classes at Law Street Beach in the Pacific Beach neighborhood - 10am on Saturdays and Sundays - or enjoy some stunning San Diego vistas with one of the city's iconic hikes - my favorites are Torrey Pines, Cowles Mountain and Mt Woodson/"Potato Chip Rock."

  3. Stroll through the local farmers markets and grab some locally-made snacks and goodies -- a great way to ensure your travel dollars go right back into the local economy! My favorites are Little Italy (Saturdays) and Hillcrest (Sundays)

  4. Take the ferry to Coronado Island and enjoy beautiful views of downtown San Diego from the boat. Once on the island, head to the historic Hotel Del Coronado (ever seen Some Like it Hot? This was where it was filmed) and lay out by the sea at the pristine beaches in front of the hotel (less crowded than the popular Mission or Pacific beaches)

  5. Pack a picnic with your Farmers Market finds (don't forget to BYO reusable cups and cutlery!) and take in one of the most beautiful sunsets of your life at Sunset Cliffs or La Jolla Cove (just remember to be respectful of the seals and sea lions frolicking nearby)
